As the Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina came to a close, the member states of the European Union emerged as the dominant force when total medals are combined.
Several EU countries delivered standout performances. The Netherlands, Italy, Germany and France all finished among the top six nations overall, highlighting Europe’s strong presence throughout the competition.
Taken together, EU member states secured 54 gold medals, 56 silver and 54 bronze, bringing their combined total to 164 medals.
Individually, Norway topped the official table with 18 gold medals and 41 medals overall, while the United States followed with 12 golds and a total of 33 medals.
European institutions were quick to applaud the athletes. Both the European Commission and the European Parliament praised the achievements of competitors from across the Union.
Looking specifically at the EU’s internal ranking among its 27 members, Italy finished first, Germany second and France third - a result widely viewed as a major success for the bloc.
"Congratulations to all participants for their dedication and achievements," the European Parliament wrote in a message on X.
